Saltwater

J. Lennon/M. Spiro/L. Spiro

Julian Lennon"'Saltwater' was co-written by a guy called Mark Spiro and his wife and I. In fact, how it all came about was pretty interesting. I'd never really thought about using outside material at all originally on this album and Mark sent me a tape and there were some things I liked about it but there were things I was unsure about and so I sat around and played with it for awhile and Mark came over and I played it to him and he was extremely happy about it. I mean, I have to credit Mark with doing most of the work on this and his wife but I think my input was very important too and it is definitely, for me, a goosebump song, you know. I feel that, I mean, just lyrically it's so beautiful, you know, and I think it's not complicated and it shows a lot of emotion and I think touches everybody because whether people care about things or situations or not, you can't help but be drawn into what the song is about, you know, and basically it's about reflections on one's life and what's happening around you in your life and very straight forward but so honest that it almost hurts."

The Lyrics

We are a rock revolving
Around a golden sun
We are a billion children
Rolled into one
So when I hear about
The hole in the sky
Saltwater wells in my eyes

We climb the highest mountain
We'll make the desert bloom
We're so ingenious
We can walk on the moon
But when I hear of how
The forests have died
Saltwater wells in my eyes

I have lived for love
But now that's not enough
For the world I love is dying
(And now I'm crying)
And time is not a friend
(No friend of mine)
As friends we're out of time
And it's slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy
Right before our eyes

We light the deepest ocean
Send photographs of Mars
We're so enchanted by
How clever we are
Why should one baby
Feel so hungry she cries
Saltwater wells in my eyes

I have lived for love
But now that's not enough
For the world I love is dying
(And now I'm crying)
And time is not a friend
(No friend of mine)
As friends we're out of time
And it's slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy
Right before our eyes

We are a rock revolving
Around a golden sun
We are a billion children
Rolled into one
What will I think of me
The day that I die
Saltwater wells in my eyes

Saltwater wells in my eyes
