Valotte: Too Late For Goodbyes

Julian Lennon "Too Late For Goodbyes" was the second single released from the Valotte album in the US (it was the 1st single for the UK). It spent two weeks at number one on America's Adult Contemporary chart!

"Well, this is when I had a break when we were doing the actual album over here and I went back to England for a weekend, (laughs) all the time I get off! But I had a deliberate argument, you could say, with my girlfriend for no reason. And it was all my fault and I knew it was my fault and I just had to go - men find it hard to say 'I'm sorry,' they do, they can't do it, and I thought rather than say sorry I'd write a song about it, on the idea. My thoughts were at the time if I didn't say sorry, it was that serious, she would have gone, that would have been it, so it would have been too late for goodbyes if I hadn't done what I did. "Too Late For Goodbyes," also directed by Sam Peckinpah, in contrast to to "Valotte's" sense of privacy, flips the other side of the coin. Julian also plays keyboard and sings, but here he's joined by a Simmons drummer, a dreadlocked bassist (Carlton Morales), and other band members including Justin Clayton. A touch of the enigmatic is added by a silhouetted human figure that mimes and cavorts in a far doorway. The song's lively, ska-derived rhythms are communicated in a twitch of a back-beat, and the lovely harmonica solo Julian plays is not so far a cry from John's sharp harp in "Love Me Do" ~ From Rock Video Idols "About His Videos: Julian Lennon" by Lenny Kaye (date unknown).
